From my research on analysing magazine front covers I have made a clear list of the common conventions and devices used in making it successful.
- Large clear masthead
- A generally simple background for the cover image - not too busy
- Plus signs and words saying 'plus'
- Lots of coverlines
- Naming lots of artists, either a variety or from similar genres depending on the magazine
- barcode
- date and price of the issue
- Red used as a key colour
- Words such as 'exclusive'
Other features are used depending on the target audience of the magazine.
